Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such medications must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
